It helps to maintain anaerobic conditions by reducing oxygen and creating an environment suitable for the growth of microbes that require low oxygen levels. Sodium thioglycolate also has bacteriostatic properties that inhibit the growth of certain bacterial species, which can be useful in selective and differential media formulations. It is commonly used in media for the enrichment, isolation, and identification of Clostridium spp., Salmonella spp., and other anaerobic bacteria in environmental samples. When used in microbial media, sodium thioglycolate is normally added at a concentration of 0.05%-0.5% (w/v). Application Sodium thioglycolate has several microbial applications due to its reducing and bacteriostatic properties. It is commonly used as an ingredient in many microbial culture media for the growth and identification of anaerobic bacteria from various environmental, food, and beverage samples.
