Application 1,10-Phenanthroline monohydrate (phen) may be used in the photochemical quantification of Fe3+ and total iron in mineral samples.[1] It may be used as starting reagent for the preparation of 5-nitro-1,10-phenanthroline.[2] When complexed with copper, it possesses nuclease activity that has been used to study DNA-protein interactions.
